Allegedly, Belmont park race track was owned by the wealthy “August Belmont,” and the gentiles changed the name of their town in order to spite him (to “Elmont%u201D)

In 1980s, a nearby resident said “At that time, blacks would not dare move into Elmont or Valley Stream. many of them were Italian, Jews and Irish who were “discriminated” against themselves. Too bad many of those idiots didn’t realize all they did was make a realtor rich because the Blacks did eventually move in.

I now live in San Francisco and see many of the same attitudes in a subtler way here.

Thank you for making it known that the bullshit of racism and prejudice was not exclusive to the South. It was alive and well in Eastern Queens County/Western Nassau County.
